6 Tips for Surviving Halloween

Happy Halloween!  Muah ha ha ha!

Halloween is the one night a year when we get to unleash our inner monsters, eat way too much candy, and turn every little thing into something spooky. But if you’re not careful, this playful holiday can turn into a horror story of its own!

Here are some survival tips for navigating Halloween with your sanity intact.

1. Costumes

Costumes aren't just for kids.  Let’s face it, Halloween costumes are all about balancing creativity with comfort. You want to impress with a killer outfit, but remember sometimes less is more.  Homemade costumes are often more impressive than store bought costumes, and can be made to your specifications and for your comfort.

2. Pumpkin Carving

Carving pumpkins is a classic Halloween activity for all ages, but we all know the dangers of going in too confident with those tiny, dull knives. Pro tip: Keep it simple. The more elaborate you try to be, the more likely you are to get hurt.  If you have young children or are simply afraid of getting hurt, it's becoming more of a trend to paint pumpkins instead of carving.  The pumpkin also lasts longer when it hasn't been cut.

3. Trick or Treating

In this day and age, Trick or Treating seems to be for all ages.  Adults enjoy dressing up and going out with their kids to enjoy the spirit of the holiday and the opportunity to dress up as something or someone else.  Before you go out, though, plan the routes and areas you plan to go.  Consider the distance and terrain, especially with younger kids.  Their endurance and mood may not be conducive to miles of walking and lots of hills.  Also, it's important to look out for your own safety when trick or treating, so stick to well-lit areas with plenty of people nearby.

4. Candy Patrol

I remember the days when my mother would go through the entire bad of Halloween candy I acquired to check for needle marks or razor blades.  It's still a good idea to check the treats that are collected when out Trick or Treating.  And whether you’re giving out treats or collecting them, candy control is key. With the small size of Halloween candies, it's easy to get carried away and eat too many, often leading to a sugar crash.  It's best to pick out a few pieces and tuck the rest away, out of sight, so you have them on hand when that enevitable sweet tooth craving comes a few days or weeks later.  Pace yourself and allow the candy to last a while.

5. Scary Movies

Halloween movies are a must, but know your limits! Not everyone can handle the creepiest, goriest horror films. If you’re prone to sleeping with the lights on after watching The Exorcist, maybe stick to the Hocus Pocus side of the spectrum. There’s no shame in a little lighthearted spooky fun.  And all Halloween movies don't have to be scary or horror flicks.  Sometimes some light-hearted silliness, celebrating the holiday, is just as fun.  Consider the age and maturity level of those who are watching.

6. Haunted Houses

Not everyone can tolerate Haunted Houses AND some haunted houses are more frightening than others.  Prior to going out to a Haunted House, get a feel for the tolerance level of those planning to attend.  Choose Haunted Houses that are good for all ages, with good clean fun.  Of course, if you're going with a group of die hard horror fans, then buckle up!

So, there you have it—your guide to surviving Halloween with your head (and your stash of candy) intact. Go forth, embrace the spookiness, and most importantly, have fun!

Happy Haunting! 🎃
